I purchased the Coyotes as a my (re)entry level shoes.
They are an extremely soft-soled and comfortable shoe. You pay for that comfort in the fact that it becomes very difficult to get passed climbs on the high-side of the 5.10 rating.
I wore these shoes for six months of solid climbing (mostly indoor). I had the pink-foot problem the for the life of the shoe as the dye continually soaked into my feet. Though I must say, of all my friends who also picked this as their entry level shoe, I'm the only one who had the problem last that long.
As I have wide feet, and these shoes have a low rand, my pinky-toe wore through the leather just above the rand.
Breaking out my (decade) old Spires, I found that the older shoes had much thicker, much nicer quality of leather.
All in all, the Coyotes were an excellent entry level shoe. I got six month of solid use out of them, and I knew exactly what I wanted to graduate to in a newer, more aggressive shoe.
as your foot lays flat in this shoe it is comfortable. however, the price of comfort is crap edging and a unstable platform. i would climb slab in these shoes and that is about it, but i would rather climb slab in some mocc slippers than these.
mediocre shoe. cold in the winter. flexible. good for a beginner or someone looking for a shoe on a budget.
These were my first pair of climbing shoes and I wore them for about 6 months, climbing 1-2 times a week, 4-5 hours per session. First off, these are definitely beginner's shoes, but for the price, they are well worth it and function very well.
The toe box shape fits my foot shape very well (make sure you try them on and see if they work for you!) and the leather uppers became very form fitting after a short break in period. For me, they almost could have been slippers. I would just slip them on and lightly tie the laces. They fit that well! One thing to note is that they will turn your feet red for the first several sessions, making it look like you have a horrible sunburn! Not a big deal really, but some people may find it a bit annoying.
I've worn this shoe indoors and on granite, limestone, and sandstone. It performed pretty well on everything. This shoe does well from slab to slightly overhanging, but once the rock really tips back, they start lose performance. I would say they smear slightly better than what they edge, but it does both well enough for a beginner. You won't be standing on any dime edges, but it will help you get to the point where you'll be able to use a shoe that can. I haven't done much crack climbing in them, so I can't really say anything about that.
These shoes are definitely comfortable if you buy them in the right size. Mine didn't stretch as much as I thought they would. I bought 1 size small, and I really think they only stretched about 1/2 size. Maybe I was on crack or my feet grew, but if I had it to do again I would only anticipate 1/2 size stretch.
Durability has been very good on the Coyotes. The rubber still has a lot of life on it and the leather and laces are still in great shape. I did keep a close eye on the rand and superglued it once or twice when it looked like it might have been separating from the leather. Its also possible I was just being anal!
All in all, I'm very glad I bought these shoes. They perform very well for a beginner and help you learn techniques that will allow you to make the most out of a higher-performance shoe. You can't beat the price, and they don't look half bad either!
1st Shoe
Good first shoe. Size them small. They will stretch 1-1.5 sizes.
1st Shoe
These were my first pair of climbing shoes. I used them for about 3-4 months climbing about 3hours/week. These shoes stretch at least 1-1.5 sizes. The lace holes one of the shoes nearly ripped open because I had to lace them so tight. What can I say... they are a great beginner shoe. They help your feet get used to being in a climbing shoe. After using these I knew what i wanted in my next pair of shoes. I still use them for fitness climbing but not for anything super technical. They are a nice shoe to have in my bag if i need something comfortable enough to wear all day or while belaying.
