Whew...these shoes are not for the meek. Really solid on overhanging, pocketed terrain. I sized mine 1.5 down from my street shoe size and the heel fits really well, though my big toes paid the price during the break in period. However, these do seem to "morph" to your feet pretty quickly so if sized too big they may become sloppy.
All in all, a great shoes for when the going gets steep.
I did a review on the Dragons too, but I definitely think these are the best bouldering shoe around. They work the best on steep overhang, from the smallest foot hold to jugs, but also work really well on slab on can smear pretty well. I wear about a size down from my street shoes and they fit pretty tight. The heel isn't the best in them, but you can't say anything against the shoe because there really aren't any shoes that have the perfect heel, right? The single velcro strap (with two different places to tighten to) helps with the heel and the shoe generally stays on, but the heel does feel loose. The recycled rubber on the top of the toe-box does peel off as they get older, but still work really well for toe-hooks. My current pair are 13 months old and still work amazing inside and outside (that's climbing in them 5 days a week). Definitely my first recommendation for bouldering, but also work fairly well on ropes. ENJOY!
Simple high performance.
When you put these on compared to an Italian shoe, such as a Scarpa or Sportiva, these feel as refined as bowling shoes at first. The heel is a rubber triangle, and the toe box seems like it would fit Fred Flintstone's club feet. But break them in, let them mold to your feet a bit, and they turn into great high performance shoes that may end up on the top of your kit all season.
Easy to get on, simple closure, power in the toe... what more do you need? Seems like they fit in the heel a little baggy, but the slingshot keeps them on if you size them tight. Which, if you are buying these, you will be.
These excel at frontpoint power smearing, like on overhanging blocky limestone or overhanging granite "smedges". Not the best pure edging boot, but it's strengths in the rest of the arena make it easy to put up with that weakness.
Yeah, not a great looking boot, but its one that works.
