First, i climb mostly boulder routes which is why i gave lower ratings for sport and trad climbing. However, my honest opinion is that the Katana Lace-up is a highly under-rated shoe.
LaSportiva already has some amazing technical shoes with the Solution and Muira VS, which i tried and liked but had issues with comfort. The Katana offers much of the same technical aspects of the previously mentioned models but with a much more forgiving upper. don't be fooled by the product images, the Katana has a considerable amount of downturn to the toe, not nearly as much as the Solution but enough to keep you from cutting on overhangs. another advantage is the shoe is much more versatile than the Muira and Solution. i could barely smear with either of them because they're so aggressive. the Katanas are a great balance of a technical and practical. i have a low volume, medium width foot with a narrow heal and these shoes are incredibly comfortable! i also sized an entire full size so they're very snug.
as mentioned in another review, toe hooking is not great with the Katanas due to the lack of rubber over the top of the toes. i'd say that's this shoes downfall for you crazy steep wall climbers.
The Katana Lace-up is nothing like the original Katana
Its a lot more downturned and is more like the miura VS
it doesn´t fit my foot as well as the old Katana and is not as sensitive
all in all i like the old katana a whole lot more
and to me it does hurt on the achilles a lot more than the Velcro version
the katana laces feels not comfortable to me and it will never be my number 1 shoe
I never had a shoe that fits so good. If you have trouble with roomy heelcups, try the Katana Laces. Fits even better than the Katana Velcro AND it doesn't hurt on the achilles-tendon like the old Katana used to. And they are soooooo comfy! I am in love with these, seriously.
The new Katana Laces is made for edging and it edges great! Heelhooks very good, only the Toehooks aren't that great, not the best shoe for overhangs and bouldering but still ok. The XS Edge sole is very durable but not as sticky as the new XS Grip², although it's supposed to be as sticky as the XS Grip, which was great. So still not sure about that. I guess it's more a mind thing... if you expect your foot to slip, it will -.-
The quick-laces-design is quite good.
